Chimney repairs, removals & repoints.

From hairline cracks to full rebuilds. We work from scaffold, not ladders, and everything is left watertight.

Chimneys are the single biggest cause of roof leaks. Failed pointing, eroded flaunching, perished flashings, cracked pots - we assess it all, explain what actually needs doing, and do it properly.

When to call us

If any of these sound familiar, it's worth a call. A free survey will tell you what's actually needed - and whether it's a repair or something bigger.

  • Damp patch on the bedroom wall near the chimney breast
  • Cracked mortar visible in the pointing
  • Flaunching around the pots cracked or missing pieces
  • Lead flashing lifted, torn or clearly perished
  • Pots leaning or loose in the flaunching
  • Chimney stack visibly tilting

How we approach chimney repairs, removals & repoints.

Chimneys are the single most common cause of roof leaks. They sit higher than anything else, they’re exposed to more weather, and most of them haven’t been touched in 30 years. We scaffold every chimney job - we don’t do them off a ladder. Then we assess all three systems: the brickwork, the flaunching, and the flashings. Any one of them failing is enough to cause damp.

Repointing is matched to the building’s age. Victorian and Edwardian stacks get hydraulic lime mortar - it moves with the building and breathes. Post-war stacks get a cement and sand mix with plasticiser. Flaunching gets re-done in the same cement-sand mix. Flashings get stripped off and re-dressed in fresh Code-5 lead to Lead Sheet Association specifications.

What's included

  • Full repoint in lime or cement mortar
  • Flaunching renewal and pot re-bedding
  • Chimney removal (stack-down or stub) with new roof section
  • Code-5 lead flashing renewal
  • Pot replacement, cowls and bird guards
  • Scaffold access for safety - never a ladder for chimney work

What we use

  • NHL 3.5 hydraulic lime mortar (pre-1919 buildings)
  • Sand and cement mortar, plasticised
  • Code-5 rolled lead, hand-dressed
  • Replacement clay pots and cowls
  • Bird guards and rain caps where needed
  • Stainless fixings and proprietary chimney trays

How long it takes

A standard chimney repoint and re-flash takes two to three working days including scaffold. Full chimney removal (stack-down to below the roofline, new timbers, new roof section) takes four to six days.
